DeepSeek Takes Over and Everyone Gets An AI Agent!

Welcome to this week’s edition of Product & Design Pulse, where we explore the latest in tech, product, design, and innovation! This week, we delve into China’s AI ambitions with the groundbreaking DeepSeek model, a key development in the global race for technological dominance. Larry Ellison shares Oracle’s evolving AI strategy, while the World Economic Forum debates the societal and regulatory challenges posed by emerging technologies like AI and quantum computing. We also examine the growing influence of AI in global politics, as major players like OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank reshape international alliances. Join us as we unpack the trends, strategies, and debates shaping the future of tech.

First, a word on DeepSeek. The DeepSeek v3 open source LLM that released at the end of last year is taking the tech world by storm. It is outperforming models from OpenAI (GTP-4o), Meta (Llama3.1), and Anthropic (Claude-3.5) for a fraction of the cost and energy. The total cost to train the v3 model was ~$6M in comparison to the billions of dollars spent for the closed source models based out of the US. Because of sanctions, DeepSeek, which is based in China, can only use older Nvidia GPUs which require much more efficient usage. For context, it took approximately 2.8 million GPU hours to train DeepSeek v3 where Llama 403b took 30.8 million GPU hours. This will change expectations and outlooks for the main AI rivals here in the US. It will also likely push investment lower and create the need for more efficiency over pure throughput and power. The next few months in this space will be intriguing.
